NLP – a brief history

If you are experiencing the same problems day after day, week after week, maybe it’s time to make a change. If you want to move forward in your career or life, NLP Coaching Academy in Dubai may be right for you.

What is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a set of models about how communication affects and influences subjective experience. In addition to being a change tool, NLP is also used in psychotherapy to treat a variety of problems, such as phobias and schizophrenia. NLP also aims to transform organizations and shows them how to realize their full potential and achieve great success.

The creators of NLP

NLP was founded in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder. The original goal was to find out what made three psychotherapists – Fritz Perls, a Gestalt therapist, Virginia Satir, a family therapist, and Milton H.Erickson, founding president of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis – to be more successful than their peers.

NLP chronology

1970: foundation and early development

1972: Research by Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton H. Erickson begins.

1975: Subsequently, The Structure of Magic series is published.

1976-77: Patterns of Hypnotic Techniques by Milton H. Erikson

1979: Frogs to Princes: Neuro Linguistic Programming is published

1980: Neuro Linguistic Programming: Volume I published

1980: Bandler and Grinder go their separate ways.

1981: The first of many intellectual property lawsuits begins. NLP training courses are develope by several people. Given the diversity of programmers and trainers, there is no single, definitive NLP system.

1982-87: Grinder and Judith DeLozier collaborate to develop the New NLP Code.

1984-87: The U.S. National Research Council gives an overall negative evaluation of research in experimental counseling psychology, indicating diminished interest in NLP research.

1988-89: Bandler develops Design Human Engineering(TM) and, later, Neuro-Hypnotic Repatterning(TM).

1990s: certification of NLP courses and providers begins in the UK and elsewhere.

1996-97: Bandler sues Grinder for trademark and intellectual property infringement in NLP.

Where are the co-creators now?

In late 2000, Bandler and Grinder entered into a settlement agreement, agreeing that they “are co-authors and co-creators of the neuro-linguistic programming technology”.

Richard Bandler is currently a member of the Society for Neuro-Linguistic Programming(TM) and John Grinder is a member of the International Academy of Neuro-Linguistic Programming Coaches.

NLP today

NLP remains an open field of training, with various trainers and practitioners developing their own methods and concepts. The common denominator of NLP is the teaching of various communication and persuasion skills and the use of self-hypnosis to motivate and change.

As many NLP practitioners now advertise online, the standards and quality of courses can vary. When looking for an NLP training course, make sure you choose an organization with a good reputation.

The best way to make sure that an NLP organization has a good reputation is to do a little research. There are many articles, forums and blogs dedicated to NLP training where you can find information and reviews of courses and trainers.
