This article will describe the tobacco industry’s main tobacco packaging types and formats. Additionally, we will also introduce some experimental new styles to make these lines interesting. You can consider  custom printed cannabis cigarette boxes under the same category. Notably, none of these new formats became mainstream; four main styles continue to be produced. It includes secondary packaging, collectibles, tertiary packaging, and pharmacy packaging. There is also a range of custom packaging cartons.

Types of cigarette packs

It protects the cigarette and the “pack” but makes the cigarette less accessible. Finally, in Russia and the former Soviet Union, “backpacks” or “flap bags” are the most common. These are cardboard boxes whose lids can be opened like a humidor.

The number of cigarettes in a pack depends on the type of pack. Typically, cigarette manufacturers sell cigarettes in packs of 10 and 20. However, in some markets, such as Australia, you can find packs of 25, 30, or even 50. For convenience, vending machines usually sell cigarette packs of 17, 18, or 19.

Cigarette Primary Packaging

There are four main types of tobacco packaging. Mainly, flap bags and clam shell bags are at the top. it is the name of a box designed to protect cigarettes from damage. They are most common in Western markets but are also increasingly common in Eastern European markets. It is followed by so-called “flex packs” or “soft cup packs” made of paper, which offer less cigarette protection but are less expensive to produce.

Secondary packaging

Once the production of the primary packaging is completed, the production of the individual sales units begins. A single selling unit is the package size delivered to the retailer and sold in cartons. This particular dispensing size is also available for duty-free sales. With 200(10) packs, you can avoid buying cigarettes for a long time. However, if you love a particular brand that is not easily available, you can buy dispensing sizes of 100(5) or 400(20).

Packaging and finishing

Packs of 20 and 10 can be assembled and packaged with clear film, printed film, paper rolls, or individually packaged before collection and packaging. Carton packaging is usually done with specialized machines. A typical example of a secondary pack is the “200 pack, ” consisting of two vertical packs and five flat packs.

To ensure the integrity of the packaging, especially when shipping to a free zone, packers assemble the product before using the outer packaging to ensure maximum protection. If protection is not a priority and the box is unpacked at the retailer, wrapping the box in clear polypropylene film may be more economical.

If it is not known whether the assembled product will be sold directly or opened in a retail store, printed film or paper packaging is an economical option for most sales channels. Instead of a 2x high and 2x wide pack, it’s possible to produce a 1x wide and 5x deep pack, which is roughly the same ratio as a single pack. These fax packs have a display surface suitable for advertising and promotion.

Multiple Packaging for Retail

In recent years, retail multi-packs of 40, 60, 80, and 100 bottles have been developed. Depending on the tax rate while duty-free packs of 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1600 bottles are available, you can go for anything you love.

Packs of 40 Cigarettes

Packs of 40, usually two packs of 20 wrapped in polypropylene film, are unpacked with the packaging, promising consumers the convenience and price savings of bulk buying within days. Large packs of cigarettes, i.e., singles and packs of 200 packs are subject to different tax regimes, especially in the European Union, which allow travelers to purchase taxable cigarettes for personal consumption in their country of origin.

Tertiary packaging

Tertiary packaging refers to the sub-packaged transport packaging before palletizing in the warehouse. Dispenser packs can hold 3,000, 5,000, or 10,000 bottles, and 200-bottle cartons can hold 50 bottles. The dispenser package can be packaged in a corrugated cardboard carton or polyethylene in a stretch or shrink-wrap machine. The advantage of the cardboard wrapper is its strength. Corrugated cardboard is a sturdy cigarette case container. On the other hand, polyethylene packaging is cheaper and requires fewer pallets, logistics, and storage space.

Special Custom primary packaging

Special forms of custom boxes for CBD products are mainly created for product differentiation. This types can also be variations on existing themes. The pouch binder implements the latest pouch packaging technology.

Plastic trays sealed with aluminum foil are used for individual packaging of cigarettes. There have also been attempts to mimic the packaging of cigars by wrapping them in cans. Another packaging method is to use cylindrical tubes. In some markets, simple two-piece sets are sold at a fixed price.

Everything is being tried to increase store presence, make cigars more attractive, and still economically produce them. Currently, there are no other styles outside of these four types.
